Pope Francis, First Latin American Pontiff, Passes Away at 88

Vatican city — Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and its first Latin American leader, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His death occurred at 7:35 AM CEST in his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City, following a recent battle with double pneumonia. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. He was the first Jesuit pope and the first non-European pontiff in over a millennium.

Throughout his 12-year tenure, Pope Francis was renowned for his humility, progressive views, and commitment to social justice. He championed causes such as environmental protection, economic equality, and the rights of marginalized communities. Notably, he advocated for the abolition of the death penalty and addressed the Church’s handling of sexual abuse scandals with a call for transparency and reform. Pope Francis chose to reside in the modest Casa Santa Marta rather than the traditional Apostolic Palace, reflecting his dedication to a “poor Church for the poor.” His final public appearance was during the Easter Sunday Mass on April 20, where he delivered a blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica.

Global leaders have expressed profound sorrow over his passing. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a “symbol of compassion and spiritual courage,” while French President Emmanuel Macron lauded his efforts to bring unity and hope. In accordance with Vatican protocols, preparations are underway for the papal conclave, expected to commence by May 6, to elect his successor. Pope Francis is anticipated to be interred at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, honouring his personal wishes. Pope Francis leaves behind a transformative legacy, having reshaped the Catholic Church’s approach to modern challenges and reaffirmed its commitment to compassion and inclusivity.
