Laryngectomy Survivors set World Record with National Anthem Recital in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, Telangana, India: In a remarkable display of resilience and medical advancement, survivors of laryngeal cancer created history at the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute by setting a world record for a National Anthem recital. The ceremony took place on commemorating Republic Day of India, and was officially certified by World Book of Records.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of noted dignitaries, including actor and philanthropist Nandamuri Balakrishna, who serves as Chairman and Managing Trustee of Nandamuri Basava Taraka Ramarao Memorial Cancer Foundation and Renowned radiation oncologist Nori Dattatreyudu along with World Book of Records Chartered Officer Dr. U. Eliyazar.

What made the gathering extraordinary was that the participants were total laryngectomy survivors—individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to cancer. Despite losing their natural voice, the survivors performed the Indian National Anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” using advanced assistive technologies such as electrolarynx devices and tracheoesophageal voice prostheses. Their performance stood as a powerful testament to the effectiveness of modern voice rehabilitation techniques.

Laryngeal cancer, a type of head and neck cancer, presents notable regional variation across India. According to cancer registry data, its incidence among men ranges from 1.26 to 8.18 per 100,000 population, accounting for approximately 3% to 6% of all cancers in Indian males, while in females it ranges between 0.2% and 1%. Global estimates further highlight its prevalence, emphasizing the importance of awareness, early detection, and treatment.
