IndiGo Appoints Aviation Veteran Willie Walsh as New CEO to Drive Global Expansion

New Delhi: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced the appointment of global aviation veteran William “Willie” Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), marking a significant step in the airline’s international expansion and future growth strategy.

Walsh, currently serving as the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will take over the role after completing his tenure on July 31, 2026. He is expected to join IndiGo by early August, subject to regulatory approvals.

This leadership change comes shortly after the resignation of former CEO Pieter Elbers in March 2026, following a major operational crisis that led to thousands of flight cancellations and regulatory scrutiny.

William Walsh is widely regarded as one of the most experienced leaders in global aviation. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979, later becoming CEO of British Airways and subsequently leading the International Airlines Group (IAG). Since 2021, he has been heading IATA, representing airlines worldwide.

IndiGo’s management believes that Walsh’s vast international experience, operational expertise, and strategic leadership will play a crucial role in strengthening the airline’s performance and accelerating its global ambitions.

With IndiGo holding a dominant share in India’s aviation market and aiming to expand its long-haul and international operations, Walsh’s appointment is seen as a key move to guide the airline into its next phase of growth.
