Srisailam Dam Earns World Book of Records Recognition for Exceptional Engineering and Flood Resilience

Andhra Pradesh, India: Srisailam Dam included in World Book of Records for its distinctive engineering features, impressive infrastructure and capacity to withstand extreme flood conditions. The recognition highlights the dam’s engineering significance and its contribution to water management in southern India. World Book of Records certificate was presented to Srisailam MLA Budda Rajasekhar Reddy by U. Eliyazar, Joint Secretary (South Region) of World Book of Records.

Among the key features recognised are the dam’s massive crest gates, each measuring approximately 60 feet in width and 55 feet in height. These substantial structures represent a distinctive engineering feature of the project. Situated approximately 980 feet above sea level, the Srisailam Dam occupies an important position in the region’s water infrastructure. Its ability to manage substantial water flows has been particularly significant during periods of extreme flooding.

During the unprecedented floods of 2009, the dam reportedly withstood a record flood discharge of approximately 25.4 lakh cusecs per second, demonstrating the importance of its structural design and flood-management capabilities.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Budda Rajasekhar Reddy appreciated the dedication and technical expertise of the engineers who contributed to the construction of the Srisailam Dam. He also congratulated officials of the Irrigation Department for their efforts in maintaining and managing this major infrastructure project.

The honour places the spotlight on Srisailam Dam as a significant infrastructure landmark and underscores the importance of engineering innovation, effective water management and flood resilience in supporting regional development.
