Nepal: Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, known worldwide for climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in a record time and featured in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible,” has been confirmed dead after a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region.
He was among 10 climbers who lost their lives in one of deadliest mountaineering disasters. Recovery efforts have been severely hampered by dangerous terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Purja, a former Gurkha and UK Special Forces soldier, became a global icon for redefining high-altitude mountaineering through his record-breaking achievements and for inspiring millions with his determination and resilience. Tributes have poured in from governments, fellow climbers, and admirers around the world, remembering his extraordinary contributions to mountaineering and adventure.
It is a tragic loss for the global climbing community, and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives in the avalanche.
